Motril town
Motril is the largest town on the Costa tropical with 50,000 inhabitants. It is a commercial town
that benefits from the tropical fruit and flower producers in the area. The town of Motril is
located just off the main coast road between Almeria and Malaga where the N325 turns inland for
Granada. It is a good place to go shopping for necessities, perhaps in one of the out of town
hyper-markets.

Motril town is modern yet very Spanish. There are lots of shaded places to sit in
the various plazas and outside street cafés. The climate is very mild throughout the entire year on
the Costa Tropical

Motril port
Motril is best known for its busy commercial port. There is also a
fishing port and a yachting Marina. There are ferries from here to Morocco. Motril's coastal strip
has two beaches Playa Granada and Playa Poniente. The Gran Hotel (****) is the best on the
coast, very comfortable and reasonably priced.

Motril port has a substantial trawler fleet and a good fish market on the quay side. Because of this
fish is plentiful and reasonably inexpensive. The local supermarkets have remarkable fish counters
and many local restaurants specialise in seafood.

Taking the little coast road west from Playa Poniente we pass Casa Astrida, formidable looking with
its heavy security. If you see a lot of police standing guard then the King is probably in
residence. It was here where the late King Baldwin of Belgium was staying when he died in 1993. A
little further west we find Motril's 'Los Moriscos' Golf course.

Motril promenades and beaches

Motril beach is long wide and natural. It is never crowded even during July and August when the
Spanish families come down for their summer holidays from Granada and Madrid.
